What is Patexia?
Founded in 2010 and based in Santa Monica, Patexia is a multidisciplinary social network. We enable our members to collaborate, share expertise and solve problems in the fields of Science, Technology, and Business. Our communities and research tools bring efficiency and transparency to the world of innovation.

My Account

How do I edit my profile?
When you are logged in, you will see a pull-down menu with your profile photo and name at the top of the site. Click to expand the menu, and then click on the "Settings" option.

How do I change my email notifications settings?
When you are logged in, you will see a pull-down menu with your profile photo and name at the top of the site. Click to expand the menu, and then click on the "Settings" option.

Then, look at the bottom of the profile menu on the left. Under "Settings," click on the "Notifications" link.

How do I change my password?
When you are logged in, you will see a pull-down menu with your profile photo and name at the top of the site. Click to expand the menu, and then click on the "Settings" option.

Then, look at the bottom of the profile menu on the left. Under "Settings," click on the "Password" link.

How do I cancel my account?

Contributing Content to our Community

What are the types of content?
As a Patexia member, we encourage you to contribute posts to the site. The content on the site is split into four different types: Analysis & Opinion, IP Reviews, News Briefs and Community Buzz. Please note that all submissions will be reviewed and can be removed at our discretion.

What are Analysis & Opinion articles?
Analysis & Opinions are a critical examinations of innovation stories and interviews with science and technology professionals. As a member, you are welcome to submit Analysis & Opinion articles about the latest innovations in your field.

How do I create an Analysis & Opinion article?
When you are logged in, go to the Newsfeed page. On the left, you will see the "Feeds" module with content types listed. Click on the "+" sign next to "Analysis & Opinion." You will be taken to the article creation form where you can upload your article.

What are IP Review articles?
IP Reviews are in depth reviews and examinations of published patents. As a member, you are welcome to submit IP Reviews.

How do I create a IP Review?
When you are logged in, search for a patent by using the search function at the top of the website. Once you're on the page for the patent you would like to review, click on the "Reviews" link located at the bottom left and then click on "New Review."

What are Community Buzz posts?
Community Buzz are shared insights or links about innovation posted by the Patexia community. As a member, you can share what you have been working on or researching, post relevant information pertaining to your industry or link to thought-provoking content or videos on other sites. For videos, we are currently only able to support video posts from Youtube and Vimeo.

How do I create a Community Buzz post?
When you are logged in, go to the main Newsfeed page. Click on the grey box in the center column that says “What are you working on?” to submit your Buzz post. Use the link, image and video icons to add those to your post.

What are News Briefs?
News Briefs are quick reads on news and information relevant to science, technology and innovation.

How do I create News Briefs?
At this time only employees and Patexia Correspondents are able to create these articles. Find more information on becoming a Patexia Correspondent below.

What is the "Depth" of an article?
Next to each post title, you will see a grey circle with a letter in it. These letters indicate the depth of the post -- G for General, S for Semi-technical, and T for Technical. Although most of our articles are easily digestible, some are more technical and require in-depth knowledge of the subject matter to fully understand the content. We've labeled our articles with different depth levels to let you know how technical the reading may get.

Can I edit my submissions?
Currently, you are able to edit Analysis and Opinion posts, but not Buzz posts or IP Reviews.

How do I get my submissions featured on the website?
Our editorial team reviews all submissions and if the article is a good fit for a feature placement on the homepage, we will let you know. Also, feel free to email us with any article suggestions that you feel should be featured.

Why did my article get removed?
Generally, articles get removed because they did not pass the editorial team's review. Articles will be removed for the following reasons:
- Improper grammar usage and incorrect spelling
- Lack of relevance
- Not fitting our content format
- Plagiarism


Our Community Newsfeed

What are the benefits of joining the Patexia community?
As a member, you get access to news and information relevant to science, technology and innovation. You can showcase your work, follow your interests, voice your opinions on the latest papers and patents, and read the latest news on industry, science and technology. You can also leverage our research tools to see and analyze intellectual property data, share knowledge with other professionals and build a network in your industry. It's absolutely free to join, so if you haven't registered yet, sign up today!

How will I appear in the community list? Is my name displayed or is it confidential?
You will appear in the community list and your name will be displayed. Many users often ask this question with regard to contests. For contest participation, the contest entrants are kept confidential and the winner may be able to opt-out of being featured as the contest winner if they choose.

What is my newsfeed?
This is the personalized listing of content you see when you first log into the website. The newsfeed includes public posts from other members, recent news posted by Patexia and posts made by members you follow.

How do I make a comment on an article?
The commenting feature is located at the bottom of each article on the site.

How do I use the messaging feature?
When logged in, a mail icon is located at the top right of the website, near your profile photo and name. Click on the mail icon and it will take you to your inbox. This is where you can read messages sent to you by other community members and notifications from the Patexia team.

Compose messages from your inbox by clicking on the "Compose New Message" link (located at the top right). You may also send messages to community members from their profile page by clicking on the “Contact” button located below their profile photo.

What's the difference between following and connecting with someone?
As a member, you have the ability to follow other community members. This means that content they post only for their followers to see will show up in your newsfeed. To follow another member, go to the member’s profile and click on the green “Follow” box under the member's profile photo.

When a person you're following is also following you, that a connection.

How do I put an article in my list of favorites?
Click on the word “Favorite” at the end of a post to add it to your list of favorite posts. To see all your favorite posts, go to your profile and click on “Favorites” in the menu on the right.

How can I share content?
Simply go to any article on the website and then click on any of the different sharing options (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+, etc.) located at the top of the article. On the Newsfeed, you can access the share options by clicking on the plus sign that appears with the article listing.

Where on the site are consulting opportunities posted?
Currently, consulting opportunities are handled off-site to protect our clients interests. If you follow your interests, you may receive email from us when we have matching consulting opportunities based on those interests and your profile.


Our Contest Platform

I'm not from the US or Canada, can I participate?
Yes. People from most countries can participate, though there are some additional forms you will have to fill out if you win. More details can be found in the Legal Terms under the Prizes section.

Who is Patexia/Can you tell me more about the company?
Patexia is a multidisciplinary social network for research, business, and intellectual property professionals. You can read more at our About Us page.

Why do I only get one entry?
For the moment, that's just how the system works. Make sure you take your time and ensure your entry is complete before you submit it. If you make a mistake, feel free to contact us at contests@patexia.com and a member of Patexia's staff can reopen you submission.

How are the contest prizes shared?
Prizes are awarded according to the General Contest Rules, but in general, the majority of the prize will winner(s) with the top score, and the reminder will be split amongst qualified runners up. A portion of a winner's or runner up's prize pool may also be reserved for the user who referred them to Patexia in the first place.

When will I get paid?
All winner and runner up payments are made within 60 days of the winner and runner up announcement date. Note that the winner and runner up announcement date is not the same as the contest close date.

How do I receive the money?
All payments will be sent directly to the PayPal account that you have associated with your Patexia profile. For any first time winner or runner up we ask that you submit a W9 or a W8BEN depending on your country of residence.

Can you certify the quality of my submission somehow/provide me with proof of experience in prior art search?
Depending on the quality of your submission, it may be possible for us to provide you with some form of verification of your experience. We are working on a points/badge system and may implement something more formal in the future. If this is something you're particularly interested in, please contact us to discuss it.

What format do I need to submit my citations in?
You don't need to use a particular format, if you follow the prompts on the contest submission page, it should guide you through the process naturally. You'll just need to fill out a few fields in a form.

How can I submit supporting documents?
At the moment, you don't need to submit any supporting documents, only citations for the references you'd like to submit. Generally, we can look them up. We may change this in the future to allow you to submit supporting documents.

Where can I find references/how can I start my search?
This is a big subject and there are a million answers to this question, but you can begin with Patexia’s Tips for Patent Study.

Who judges the submissions/how are the submissions judged?
The submissions are judged by the Patexia case research team based on the number of question criteria they answer as well as the order of response and the thoroughness of explanation. More information about the specific criteria for each contest can usually be found in the contest detail section of the individual contest page.

Do you provide access to third party databases?
As a member, you can, make unlimited queries to the Patexia IP Research tools for free. We do not currently provide access to third party databases for the contests.


Our Research Tools

What is the IP Research Tool?
It is a database of over 4.1 million U.S. patents granted since 1976. In addition to searching individual patents, registered users can use advanced search functions to create tailored searches and conduct data analysis. Search results are presented using visualization tools, enabling users to discover industry trends and compare companies’ patent portfolios.

Do I need to be a member to use the IP Research Tool?
Yes. It's absolutely free to sign up for an account.

How do I use the IP Research Tools?
On the IP Research Tool page, you will see a menu located on the left with a Search Guide that will get you started down the right path.

How often is the patent database updated?
The patent database is updated every Tuesday when the US Patent & Trademark Office releases its latest approved patents.

Can I search international patents?
At this time, the database only includes US patents. However, Patexia plans to add other patent and non-patent databases from around the world in the future.


Technical Questions/Troubleshooting

Pages or videos are not loading up correctly, how can I fix this?
We suggest clearing out your browser cache. You can normally do this by going into the "Options" menu for  your browser settings. If you need more information on how to do this, please go here.
