Potential HIV vaccine shows promising results

According to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, a new study finds that an experimental vaccine was successful in protecting monkeys from a HIV-like virus. The experiment showed that, when compared to placebo, about 80 percent of the treated monkeys had a reduced risk of contracting the virus. Additionally, the experimental monkeys that did contract the virus had much less of the virus in their blood than infected control monkeys. This study has showed scientists that the immune system defense against infection defers significantly from the defense against viral replication. Plans for human-adapted versions of this specific study are underway.
