VIDEO - Toshiba object scanner: Supermarkets no longer need barcodes?

Toshiba Tec has developed a laser scanner, the Object Recognition Scanner, that can instantly identify merchandise via pattern recognition. By eliminating surrounding image 'noise' around the object, the scanner can tell the difference between the object and its surroundings. While it cannot learn new items in a store, Toshiba plans on shipping the scanner with a broad database of agricultural produce and other items. Currently, the development team is fine-tuning the scanner to be completely accurate regardless of object movement speed and nearness to the camera.
