Patent 09689159 - Panel for sheathing system and method > Claims

  • 1. A panel system capable of covering at least a portion of a building frame structure, the system comprising:nat least two structural panels, a first panel including an outer surface, an inner surface, and at least one edge extending therebetween, the first panel capable of aligning with its at least one edge proximate to at least one edge of a second panel, and capable of defining a joint between the first panel and the second panel;a bulk water resistant and water vapor permeable barrier layer secured to the outer surface of the first panel and the second panel; anda bulk water resistant seam sealant capable of sealing the joint between the proximate edges of the first panel and the second panel.
    • 2. The system of claim 1, wherein the first panel with the secured barrier layer and the second panel with the secured barrier layer have a water vapor transmission rate from about 0.7 to about 7 grams/m2/24 hr, as determined by ASTM E96 procedure A (73° F.—50% RH) and/or a water vapor permeance from about 0.1 to about 12 perms, as determined by ASTM E96 procedure B (73° F.—50% RH); andnthe first panel with the secured barrier layer and the second panel with the secured barrier layer have a liquid water transmission rate from about 1 to about 28 grams/100 in2/24 hr, via Cobb ring in accordance with ASTM D5795.
    • 3. The system of claim 1, wherein the structural panels comprise oriented strand board.
    • 4. The system of claim 1, wherein the structural panels comprise plywood.
    • 5. The system of claim 1, wherein the panel system is configured to allow for the escape of water vapor from within the building frame structure.
    • 6. The system of claim 1, wherein the panel system is configured to allow for the escape of water vapor from the structural panels.
    • 7. The system of claim 1, wherein the barrier layer is secured to the outer surface of the first panel and the second panel prior to aligning the first panel and the second panel.
    • 8. The system of claim 1, wherein the building frame structure comprises a wall frame structure.
    • 9. The system of claim 1, wherein the building frame structure comprises a roof frame structure.
  • 10. A panel system, comprising:nfirst and second structural panels, each of the first and second structural panels including an outer surface and an inner surface, the first and second structural panels being capable of being installed adjacent to one another with a joint defined therebetween;a bulk water resistant barrier layer secured to the outer surface of each of the first and second structural panels prior to installation of the first and second structural panels; anda bulk water resistant tape for sealing the joint between the first and second structural panels;wherein:the structural panels comprise oriented strand board, plywood, particleboard, medium density fiberboard, or wafer board;the first panel with the secured barrier layer and the second panel with the secured barrier layer have a water vapor transmission rate from about 0.7 to about 7 grams/m2/24 hr, as determined by ASTM E96 procedure A (73° F.—50% RH); and/orthe first panel with the secured barrier layer and the second panel with the secured barrier layer have a water vapor permeance from about 0.1 to about 12 perms, as determined by ASTM E96 procedure B (73° F.—50% RH).
    • 11. The system of claim 10, wherein the structural panels comprise oriented strand board.
      • 12. The system of claim 11, wherein the structural panels have a thickness of from about 0.25 inches to about 1.25 inches.
      • 13. The system of claim 11, wherein the barrier layer comprises a polymer.
      • 14. The system of claim 11, wherein the tape has a thickness of about 3.0 to about 34.0 mils.
  • 15. A panel system, comprising:nfirst and second panels, the first and second panels being capable of being installed adjacent to one another, the first and second panels each including a primary structural layer comprising a wood composite material, the first and second panels each also including a bulk water resistant barrier layer secured to the primary structural layer prior to installation of the first and second panels; anda bulk water resistant seam sealant for sealing between the first and second panels;wherein:the first and second panels have a water vapor transmission rate from about 0.7 to about 7 grams/m2/24 hr, as determined by ASTM E96 procedure A (73° F.—50% RH); and/orthe first and second panels have a water vapor permeance from about 0.1 to about 12 perms, as determined by ASTM E96 procedure B (73° F.—50% RH).
    • 16. The system of claim 15, wherein the first and second panels are further capable of being installed adjacent to one another with a joint defined therebetween.
    • 17. The system of claim 15, wherein the primary structural layer comprises oriented strand board.
    • 18. The system of claim 15, wherein the primary structural layer comprises plywood.
    • 19. The system of claim 15, wherein:nthe seam sealant comprises a bulk water resistant tape for sealing between the first and second panels;the tape comprises a backing and an adhesive layer; andthe tape has a water vapor permeance of greater than 1.0 perm, as determined by ASTM E96 procedure B (73° F.—50% RH).
