| Biography | Dr. Trevor J. Hall was born in England in September 1956. He studied general engineering, specializing in electrical sciences, at Christ's College, Cambridge University, UK (1974-1977), where he was awarded a BA degree in engineering in 1977 and a MA in engineering in 1981. His postgraduate research in fiber optics was conducted at University College London, UK, where he was awarded a PhD degree in electronic engineering in 1980. He has been a member of the IEEE since 2002.
In 1979 he joined Cambridge Consultants Ltd., as an Optical Physicist and then in 1980 joined Queen Elizabeth College London, University of London, as a Lecturer in Physics; moving to King's College London, University of London, in 1984 following a merger. He was promoted to Reader in Physics in 1990. He transferred from the Physics Department to the Electronic Engineering Department in 1993 and in 1994 was promoted to Professor of Optoelectronics. In 2002, he moved to the University of Ottawa, Canada, to take up his present position of Professor and Canada Research Chair Tier I in Photonic Network Technology, Department of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science. He was the founding Director of the Centre for Research in Photonics 2003-2013. He has pioneered systems implementations of photonic device technologies; he has published ~400 scientific papers; and he has initiated 8 patents. Research validation includes the co-founding in 2005 of OneChip Photonics Inc.
He was appointed an International Fellow of Institut Mines Télécom, France, in 2013 following a sabbatical at Télécom Bretagne France where he held the SISCom International Chair 2010/11 supported by the Université Européenne de Bretagne. He was also honored in 2010/2011 as a Distinguished Scholar of the Erasmus Mundus Master in Photonics co-ordinated by Ghent University.
He is a Chartered Scientist (C.Sci), Chartered Physicist (C.Phys), and a Chartered Engineer (C.Eng); a Fellow of the Institute of Physics (FInstP); a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (FIET); and is licensed as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) in Ontario.
