VIDEO: Creating good wrinkles to grow stem cells

A research team at Tokyo University of Science has successfully grown neural stem cells three times more efficiently by culturing them on a wrinkled structure. Inspired by the naturally-occurring folds in the brain and colon, the research team created the wrinkles by driving a 5mm diameter screw into soft rubber and then applying a plasma treatment. When central nervous system cells extracted from rats were cultured on the wrinkled surface, they grew much faster than on a traditional surface.
